SUDBURY, ON, July 10 /CNW/ - The Honourable Diane Marleau, Member of Parliament for Sudbury, on behalf of the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development, today announced $26,208 in funding for the Association ontarienne des sourd(e)s francophones to provide work experience for a person with a disability and to increase the number of employment opportunities available to persons with disabilities in Sudbury's French-speaking community.

"The Government of Canada is committed to removing barriers that affect persons with disabilities," said Ms. Marleau. "This project will allow the participant to gain meaningful work experience, which will ultimately help to facilitate her return to the labour market. By promoting public awareness and sensitivity to persons with disabilities, this project will also help to increase the number of job opportunities open to hearing-impaired people in the City of Greater Sudbury."

The project will enable one disabled person in Sudbury to gain valuable work experience at the Association ontarienne des sourd(e)s francophones. The participant will promote public awareness of various services, such as interpreters and new technology, available to help hearing-impaired people in their daily lives and to enter the work force. The participant will research and survey the needs of persons with disabilities, work with the media to write articles, develop a Web site and plan activities and events to increase employment opportunities for hearing-impaired persons within Sudbury's French-speaking community.

This project is being funded through the Opportunities Fund for persons with disabilities, administered by Human Resources Development Canada. The objective of the Opportunities Fund is to help persons with disabilities prepare for, obtain, and keep employment or self-employment. The Opportunities Fund supports a broad array of employment activities for persons with disabilities who are not eligible for employment benefits under the Employment Insurance Act.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.

This project has been reviewed to ensure compliance with the Department's administration of its grant and contribution programs.
