June 20, 2003
São Paulo, 20 - Brazil´s industrial employment fell 1% in April compared with the same month last year, the Brazilian Census Bureau (IBGE) said Friday.
Against March, employment dropped 0.9% in April.
In the year through April, industry expanded its workforce by a slight 0.2% versus the comparable period of 2002. In the 12 months ending April, however, employment was down 0.3%.
In a year-on-year comparison, employment shrank in nine of 12 regions and ten of 18 industrial segments surveyed by the IBGE.
Downward pressure came mostly from the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which are home to Brazil´s first and second largest industries, respectively.
April´s employment, compared with a year before, slipped 2.5% in São Paulo and 3.3% in Rio de Janeiro.
By industry, the worst performers were manufacturing (down 8.6%) and non-metallic mineral resources (down 5.9%).
The average earnings of industrial workers, meanwhile, increased 0.7% in April against March, the IBGE said. In annual terms, workers registered a 7.5% loss, though.
