VANCOUVER, June 12 /CNW/ - At its annual community meeting yesterday, Vancouver Foundation announced that it is now accepting grant applications from non-profit organizations to provide specialized tools, services and workplace accommodations to support persons with disabilities overcome barriers to employment.

The Government of British Columbia has recently established a $20 million permanent endowment fund at Vancouver Foundation called the Disability Supports for Employment Fund. Approximately $1 million in income generated by the fund will be distributed annually through grants to non-profit, registered charitable organizations.

"Removing obstacles to employment for people with disabilities is what this new endowment fund is all about," said Richard Mulcaster, Vancouver Foundation President and CEO. "We are pleased to be working with the Government of British Columbia and non-profit organizations across the province to do just that."

Grants distributed will be used to purchase employment-related supports for people with disabilities who have no other financial resources available. Supports may include workplace improvements such as ramps and automatic doors and technological devices including text readers, Braille printers and specialized keyboards.

The fund will be administered by the Vancouver Foundation, with input and advice from the Minister's Council on Employment for Persons with Disabilities. The Minister's Council is a new initiative established by the BC Ministry of Human Resources to work on innovative ways to increase the employment, employability and independence of people with disabilities.

Vancouver Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening communities across British Columbia. As Canada's largest community foundation, it manages more than $500 million in endowment funds and last year distributed more than $33.6 million in income to non-profit groups for community projects in 82 towns and cities across the province.
