In the ever-shifting perceptions about job security, more people think they will be able to keep their jobs, but a huge majority see a very tough job market out there for those who are out of work.

Right Management Consultants surveyed 1,000 full-time workers around the country and found more than half believe they have job security.

"In the two-and-a-half years since we have been tracking worker confidence levels, this is the most positive American workers have felt about their own job security," Ray DeMaio, regional vice president for the Parsippany-based company, said. "But that personal confidence doesn't translate across the board, with 8 out of 10 Americans still believing it would be hard for an out-of-work employee to find new work."

Back amongst the working, confidence is also growing about the chances for career growth. Fifty percent of those surveyed were so confident about their employment, they believed they would advance at their current companies. This optimism was paced by 70 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds who said job advancement was possible, and 63 percent of blacks and 61 percent of Hispanics felt they also would climb the corporate ladder.
