D.C. Area Enjoying Employment BoomBy Associated Press
May 16, 2004
WASHINGTON - The Washington region's job market may be enjoying its biggest employment boom since the late 90s.
The Washington Post reports, more than 60,000 jobs were added in the 12 months ending in March.
Many of the newly create jobs are the result of low interest rates and big government spending.
That worries some economists, who believe that interest rates have to start rising sometime and that government spending will start to slow because of the growing deficit.
Retailers added more than 10,000 jobs. Construction companies brought on 8,000 more employees, and the government payroll expanded by nearly 9,000 people.
Health and education, telecommunications, wholesaling, distribution, and management saw little in the way of gains.
