DES MOINES, Iowa - Maytag Corporation has agreed to pay more than 334-thousand dollars to settle an age discrimination lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed by the U-S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of three regional sales managers who claimed they were demoted.
Ethan Cohen, who represented one of the defendants in the case, says the Newton-based company demoted eight managers older than age 50 to a new position of zone manager in 1999.
In some cases, their replacements were younger, and the lawsuit alleges that one new supervisor referred to the demoted workers as quote -- "dinosaurs with a computer."
The agreement requires the commission to monitor Maytag's terminations and demotions of sales managers for two years. It also requires Maytag to retrain managers in age discrimination and must keep records of sales staff demotions for two years.
Maytag officials deny any wrongdoing, but say the settlement was in the best interest of the company.
