Tyson Layoff Reduces Hope Plant Employment by One-Third

With as many as 600 jobs disappearing at a Tyson Foods poultry plant in Hope, local businesses are concerned about the impact on the economy.

The plant, before layoffs, employed 1,650 people.

Barry Brown, who runs Barry's Grocery and Market, says many Tyson employees come by to cash their paychecks and spend that money.

John Henley, owner of the local Western Auto, said many of his customers work at the plant, some with lines of credit on which payments could fall behind.

Meetings will be conducted at the plant by state agencies in hope of easing the transition for laid off employees.

Workshops on unemployment benefits, employment retraining, and educational opportunities are to be held at the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope campus.

The company says it will contract out labor-intensive boning work to other companies in Arkadelphia and Dardanelle.
