In light of unemployment, I would like to bring a matter to the attention of the public, which, for whatever reason, does not seem to attract the attention of any of our public officials.
I have sent correspondence to all of them, including the governor. To date, only Sen. Thomas Carper’s office has replied.
As one who is unemployed and trying desperately to find a job, it is very upsetting to find that most corporate employers do personal credit checks prior to considering a candidate. While I feel this to be an invasion of privacy on so many levels, it is also discriminatory to those of us who sincerely are trying to do nothing more than support their families.
Unemployment is devastating in and of itself, but denying employment based on the fact that a candidate’s credit score has been damaged due to unemployment is nothing less than discrimination.
While I do not dispute an employers right to perform criminal background checks for obvious reasons, I do believe that a line needs to drawn with regard to an individual’s personal credit history.
