Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., a CIGNA Corp. unit, will pay $50,000 to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of bias against a pregnant job applicant, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said.

Connecticut General refused to hire Carmen Santa Cruz as a customer service associate in CIGNA's Phoenix call center because she was pregnant, the commission said. The EEOC sued Connecticut General in March of 2004. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act bars employers from basing hiring decisions on speculation about the abilities of pregnant women in the workplace.

Connecticut General will pay $50,000 to Santa Cruz and agreed to review policies and train employees at the call center about pregnancy discrimination, the EEOC said.

CIGNA denied any discriminatory activity and said it settled for economic reasons.
